Make the Most of Your Botox Appointment: How to Prepare

Are you ready to say goodbye to the wrinkles and fine lines that are making you look older than you feel? At Milani MedSpa in Vienna, Virginia, we understand the frustration of aging skin, and we’re here to help.

Kavian Milani, MD, and our team of professionals offer injectables like Botox® to improve your skin and help you look and feel your best. We’ve curated a list of five tips to help you make the most of your upcoming Botox appointment. Read on to learn more.

Avoid certain medications and supplements

Some medications and supplements act like blood thinners because they affect your platelets, the cells that work to stop bleeding. When your platelets can’t get to the site of the Botox injection quickly, your chances of bruising increase.

To make the most of your Botox appointment, stop taking aspirin, NSAIDs (naproxen and ibuprofen), and blood-thinning supplements two weeks before your appointment. Supplements to avoid include:

If you take regular medicines, let us know before you stop taking them. Our trained specialists discuss medication or supplement use with you before Botox treatment to ensure your health and the best results.

Say no to alcohol

Vasodilators cause your blood vessels to open and relax. Alcohol is one of these vasodilators, and even a small amount can increase your risk for bruising. If you want to make the most of your Botox treatment, eliminate alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Even small amounts, like a glass of wine or a shot of hard liquor can affect how much you bruise.

Try using arnica

Arnica is a plant that has been used for centuries to treat multiple health conditions, including bruising and swelling. Take Arnica tablets 4-5 days before and after your Botox appointment to help stop bruising. You can buy Arnica online or at most drugstores.

Work out before your treatment

If exercise is part of your daily routine, get your session in before your appointment. The increased heart rate and blood flow from your workout increases your chances of bruising. And wait 24 hours before your next workout session.

Bare your skin

Leave your makeup bag at home. Avoid applying makeup before and for a few hours after your treatment session. And don’t rub the injection sites. We know this can make washing your face difficult, so it’s best to come to your appointment with clean, bare skin.
