Finally a Nonsurgical Remedy for That Pesky Double Chin

If you have a double chin, you know all the tricks for disguising it in photos and in real life. Maybe you’ve tried to get rid of it with diet and exercise or practiced jaw movements in the mirror to try to spot-train your double chin. Unfortunately, spot training doesn’t work, and you may be genetically designed for a double chin, no matter how little you weigh. But what if you could get rid of your double chin without having surgery?

Here at Melani MedSpa, we want you to look and feel incredible, and that includes boosting your confidence and self-esteem. That’s why we offer Kybella® injections to reduce double chins and define jawlines at our modern and comfortable office in Vienna, Virginia.

What causes a double chin?

A double chin, clinically referred to as submental fat, is the pocket of extra fat and loose skin under your chin. Your genes are a significant factor contributing to your chances of developing a double chin.

However, you may also develop a double chin as you age and your skin loses elasticity. Your lifestyle can also contribute to your submental fat. For example, if your diet is full of processed foods and includes too many calories, you can gain weight and a double chin. Also, if you have poor posture, or spend hours every day with your head tilted down to gaze at your phone, the muscles around your chin and neck can weaken and fail to hold your skin as tautly.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that specifically targets the submental fat that causes your double chin. The injections include deoxycholic acid, which is one of the acids your body uses to break down fat in your digestive system. When we inject Kybella into your double chin, the acid helps your body break down and remove your submental fat, leaving you with a well-defined jaw line.

Most of our patients have 2-6 treatments, and we recommend that you have your injections every 4-6 weeks to achieve your optimal results.

How does Kybella work?

Your lymphatic system effectively flushes toxins and dead cells out of your body. When Kybella damages your fat cells, your body absorbs them and flushes them out with other waste products. Your well-defined jaw line emerges as your submental fullness, or double chin, disappears.

What should I expect during a Kybella treatment?

We begin by taking pictures of your face from the front and in profile. Then, we apply a topical numbing cream to your chin and mark your injection sites. The marks look like a grid of dots and guide the injections for even distribution of Kybella.

Kybella treatments usually take 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of your double chin and the number of injections needed. After your injections are complete, you wear a compression bandage around your head, which helps control swelling.

Swelling after a Kybella treatment is normal — it means that the injections are working to destroy your fat cells. You can apply ice to your chin, but you shouldn’t take painkillers for 48 hours after your injections.

You should start to notice a difference after a few weeks. After Kybella damages your fat cells, your body needs time to remove them from your body.

Am I a good candidate for Kybella?

We provide thorough consultations before recommending any treatments, including Kybella. If you’re in good health but unhappy about your double chin and reluctant to try more invasive cosmetic treatments, Kybella could be a great solution to your concerns.

The best way to find out if Kybella is right for you is to give us a call or schedule an appointment online to meet with our aesthetic team. After an exam and consultation, we can confirm if Kybella is right for you and start the injection process.
