5 Ways to Prevent Premature Wrinkles

Smoking tobacco is one of the worst things you can do for your overall health. By choosing not to smoke, you’re not only decreasing your risk of cancer and heart disease, but you’re also preventing wrinkles from forming on your face and body for a longer period of time.

The nicotine in cigarettes narrows the blood vessels in the top layer of your skin. This slows the blood flow to your skin, decreasing the delivery of beneficial nutrients and vitamins from reaching your skin. 

And tobacco is loaded with toxic chemicals that damage your skin’s collagen and elastin, important proteins in skin health. And the facial expressions you make while smoking accelerate the appearance of fine lines around your mouth. 

3. Watch what you eat and drink

Staying hydrated and eating nutrient-rich foods are essential for your skin. Eat foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries and kale, because they help reduce the damage to your cells. 

Also, abstain from or limit alcohol use. Just one night out drinking can dehydrate your skin to a point where wrinkles and fine lines become more apparent. This is especially true if you have naturally dry skin. 

4. Don’t forget the sunscreen

Photoaging, or premature aging of the skin due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun or tanning lights, causes wrinkles, lines, and sunspots. Using sunscreen regularly can stop photoaging and help you maintain smooth, healthy skin.

To avoid premature wrinkles, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Reach for sunscreen products with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen liberally to your face every day, even when it’s cloudy. And if you’re outdoors for extended periods of time, wear a hat and reapply sunscreen every two hours. 

5. Boost wrinkle prevention with Botox®
